Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Managing Editor to lead the content strategy for a leading urban planning platform and online education site. This position will oversee content creation and ensure the quality and relevance of the material across both platforms. The ideal candidate will be an urban planning enthusiast with a strong editorial background and a vision for expanding the platform's reach and authority within the industry.

Key Responsibilities:
Editorial Strategy & Leadership
Develop and execute an editorial strategy for the website, educational products, and publications, utilizing data-driven insights to inform content decisions.
Set editorial goals and establish the overall direction for content creation across multiple platforms.
Prioritize editorial activities, managing the content calendar and ensuring all deadlines are met.
Manage the content budget, aligning financial resources with editorial objectives.
Represent the content team in leadership discussions, providing updates on key projects and metrics.
Collaborate with marketing, sales, and product teams to align editorial goals with broader business objectives.

Editorial Planning & Execution
Manage editorial calendars, refining them to meet the needs of various teams and timelines.
Curate, write, and edit high-quality news articles, feature stories, blogs, and other content related to urban planning and design.
Coordinate with external contributors such as writers, instructors, and partners to ensure a steady flow of content, both written and video-based.
Participate in social media engagement and contribute to video production, including content scripting.
Content Quality
Ensure all content is relevant, accurate, and engaging for the target audience of urban planners and designers.
Keep up-to-date with the latest trends, news, and developments in urban planning, integrating this knowledge into content creation.
Team Management
Lead and support the editorial team, including an editor and video producer/editor, ensuring alignment with department goals and objectives.
Hold weekly 1:1 meetings to provide guidance, address challenges, and ensure the team understands priorities and deadlines.

Qualifications:
5+ years of relevant experience in editorial roles, preferably in urban planning, journalism, or digital media.
Passion for urban planning and a strong understanding of the planning media landscape.
Excellent editing and writing skills, with experience in online journalism or communications.
Proven success in growing and managing a media platform.
Proficiency with content management systems, SEO, and analytics tools.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively.
Experience managing cross-functional teams and collaborating with various departments.
Familiarity with tools like Google Suite, Slack, Zoom, Jira, Notion, Adobe Creative Suite, and other digital platforms.
A growth mindset, with a genuine enthusiasm for learning and evolving the business.
Success Metrics:

First 30 Days:

Gain in-depth knowledge of the platform and products.
Understand editorial performance metrics and identify areas for improvement.
Contribute 5-10 news posts per week.

First 90 Days:

Develop a comprehensive content strategy focused on increasing traffic and engagement.
Collaborate with the editorial team and external contributors to streamline content distribution.
Take the lead in the pre-production process for new video courses.

First Year:

Implement content strategies that result in a 18% increase in annual website traffic.

Compensation & Benefits:
Base Salary: $70k - $115k per year.
Paid Time Off: 15 days, increasing to 20 days after four years.
Holiday Time Off: Approximately 10 days per year.
