Job Description and Duties

Under the general supervision of the Program Representative III, the Program Representative I (PR I) enforces the laws and regulations governing auto repair and smog check and independently investigates consumer complaints.  The PR I performs the full range of duties, as specified in the Bureau of Automotive Repair’s Enforcement Policies and Procedures Manual.

Working Conditions

The incumbent works 40 hours per week in an office setting, with artificial light and temperature control.  Daily access to and use of a personal computer and telephone is essential.  Stationary position requirements in the office are consistent with office work.  In addition, the incumbent will spend approximately 75% of their time per week in the field, which includes remaining in a stationary position, driving and ambulating.  In a normal work shift, an incumbent will frequently be required to use hand manipulations and body movements.  Occasionally, an incumbent will be required to maneuver around, underneath and/or over obstacles in the process of investigations.  The incumbent is required to travel throughout an assigned geographical area by various methods of transportation.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
  • The position(s) require(s) Medical Clearance prior to being hired.

Applicants must possess a valid California driver's license and a good driving record.  Must pass a medical examination to ensure fitness.  Applicants shall have a work record clear of revocation or suspension of departmental-issued licenses for Lamp Installer/Adjuster, Brake Installer/Adjuster, Smog Technician, and or Smog Inspector.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Knowledge of equipment and methods used in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.

  • Knowledge of equipment and methods used in automotive body damage, collision repair, refinishing and restoration.

  • Ability to operate tools used in automotive repair, inspect automotive equipment, purchase parts and materials, keep accurate records of inventory, reconcile and make reports, follow oral and written directions.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with others, work efficiently, report to work on time, maintain consistent, regular attendance, work under changing priorities or deadlines, look and act in a professional manner, and exhibit courteous behavior towards coworkers.

  • Ability to analyze information and make decisions in a competent and timely manner.

  • Ability to ask effective questions, evaluates information, apply guidelines and procedures, and make accurate and timely decisions.

  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

  • Ability to maximize utilization of computers to accomplish daily tasks.

  • Positive attitude and highly motivated.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
