Description of Job

The Cultural Resource Stewardship Technician splits time between the History Colorado Center and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Headquarters in Denver.


History Colorado is the seat of Colorado’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) which
includes the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP), and more specifically the Office of the State Archaeologist (OSAC). The Resource Stewardship Program (RS) is an internal service program of Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) tasked with identifying, evaluating, and providing management assistance for all natural and cultural resources on all 42 State Parks. RS is responsible for several aspects of resource management pertaining to cultural resources, including monitoring, surveying, research, training, review, and data development. RS also has a large emphasis on the development of summaries of resources as well as the histories of State Parks, which tie in to a variety of park planning efforts. The Cultural Resource Stewardship Technician (CRST) managed by OAHP, in communication and collaboration with RS, will provide technical and administrative support to RS in monitoring State Parks, managing and conducting archaeological inventories, developing outreach materials, and providing management advice as it relates to cultural resources on State Parks.


The duties of the CRST fall into three categories:
I. Technical Support

  • Plan and prepare for State Park monitoring visits, which includes development of a field season schedule, compiling information, updating the GIS mapping of cultural resources, developing park visit goals, and coordinating visits with park staff.

  • Conduct monitoring of State Parks.

  • Complete field reports on findings from cultural survey and/or site reassessment visits to be maintained in the RS database and entered into the OAHP cultural resource and GIS databases.

  • Develop and update instructional materials related to cultural resources monitoring techniques and protocols, with training sessions for RS staff when applicable.

  • Update and maintain cultural resources data and GIS geodatabases for RS and OAHP.


II. Program Outreach
  • Assist in developing cultural resource educational information for park visitors. Develop language to be used in interpretive signs to communicate the importance and sensitivity of cultural resources.
  • Develop and update instructional materials related to cultural resources and provide trainings to park staff/volunteers as needed for the proper use, care and monitoring of artifacts in the field and in the visitor centers. Facilitate annual training for new ranger trainees.
  • Provide technical archaeological support to CPW efforts to engage tribal governments in planning and management of State Parks.
III. Management Advice as it relates to Cultural Resources on State Parks
  • Develop/assist with cultural resource chapters for Park Stewardship Plans and Park Management Plans.
  • Develop, update, and communicate plan of action for artifacts and other resources in State Parks.
  • Conduct internal CPW review of trail and capital development projects per CPW Administrative Directive B-304 to ensure cultural resources are integrated into RS comments back to State Parks and other CPW programs for recommendations on how to maintain compliance with cultural resource laws and regulations. Facilitate CPW-SHPO communication as time allows.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

The CRST position must be filled by a person who meets the basic qualifications for state permitting under the Historical, Prehistorical, and Archaeological, Resources Act of 1963, for a Principal Investigator (PI) level archaeologist (see Code of Colorado Regulations, 8CCR 1504-7; Section 5.E.).



  • 1. Graduate degree in anthropology or archaeology or history with demonstrated experience in Colorado prehistoric or historic archaeology, or in related topical, geographic or cultural areas
  • At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archaeological research, administration or management
  • At least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archaeology
  • Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion
Knowledge and Abilities:
This position is tasked with the collection, assessment, and management of cultural resource data as it relates to cultures on lands managed by CPW-RS. The position must regularly refer to local, state, and federal laws to ensure all work is in compliance with the applicable regulations. The position must adhere to industry-wide ethical standards to ensure that proper handling and management of cultural resources and related data. The person in this position should have the ability to coordinate, analyze and interpret archaeological collections from all periods and cultures represented in Colorado’s past. The position requires ability to carry out research and some management to completion. This position requires advanced communication skills to effectively interact with the general public, public agency representatives, tribal representatives, and development project representatives. This position must be knowledgeable about the archaeology in the state of Colorado. This position also requires a working knowledge of a variety of word processing and database formats (in particular Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, Google cloud products, and Esri GIS products).


Experience:
A graduate degree in history, anthropology, or a related field OR an equivalent amount of
related field/lab experience is required for this position. Experience must be sufficient to qualify as a Principal Investigator for a Colorado State Archaeology Permit. Experience in research and writing is required. Computer word processing and database experience, strong organizational abilities, and effective communication skills are required. A valid Colorado drivers license is required throughout the period of employment.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in collections management, archaeological laboratory and field methodologies, cultural resource management, preservation commission experience, or historic preservation administration.
  • Knowledge of archaeological and anthropological repository best practices and standards, including storage and inventory control.
  • Field and laboratory experience in archaeology, collections, or related field.
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures regarding sensitive data.
  • Good interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to use standard office software packages (e.g. Microsoft Office and Google Drive), with the ability to maintain databases using Microsoft Access and Google products.
  • Ability to use Geographic Information Systems including Esri products.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently.

Supplemental Information

Additional requirements for this position:

  • Ability to travel by car, truck, or van for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings.
  • Ability to work in remote areas for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to carry a pack weighing up to 50 lbs. and walk approximately 8 miles in a 10 hour day.
