The Cultural Resource Stewardship Technician splits time between the History Colorado Center and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Headquarters in Denver.
History Colorado is the seat of Colorado’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) which
includes the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP), and more specifically the Office of the State Archaeologist (OSAC). The Resource Stewardship Program (RS) is an internal service program of Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) tasked with identifying, evaluating, and providing management assistance for all natural and cultural resources on all 42 State Parks. RS is responsible for several aspects of resource management pertaining to cultural resources, including monitoring, surveying, research, training, review, and data development. RS also has a large emphasis on the development of summaries of resources as well as the histories of State Parks, which tie in to a variety of park planning efforts. The Cultural Resource Stewardship Technician (CRST) managed by OAHP, in communication and collaboration with RS, will provide technical and administrative support to RS in monitoring State Parks, managing and conducting archaeological inventories, developing outreach materials, and providing management advice as it relates to cultural resources on State Parks.
The duties of the CRST fall into three categories:
I. Technical Support
Plan and prepare for State Park monitoring visits, which includes development of a field season schedule, compiling information, updating the GIS mapping of cultural resources, developing park visit goals, and coordinating visits with park staff.
Conduct monitoring of State Parks.
Complete field reports on findings from cultural survey and/or site reassessment visits to be maintained in the RS database and entered into the OAHP cultural resource and GIS databases.
Develop and update instructional materials related to cultural resources monitoring techniques and protocols, with training sessions for RS staff when applicable.
Update and maintain cultural resources data and GIS geodatabases for RS and OAHP.
The CRST position must be filled by a person who meets the basic qualifications for state permitting under the Historical, Prehistorical, and Archaeological, Resources Act of 1963, for a Principal Investigator (PI) level archaeologist (see Code of Colorado Regulations, 8CCR 1504-7; Section 5.E.).
